Poorest of the Poor & Local Community Ownership

Digging DEEP E-Class, Session 2

In this session we invite you to hear stories about the first 2 pillars of Hands at Work: reaching the Poorest Of The Poor and working with local church members, with our goal being complete Local Community Ownership.

Step 1: Watch

Watch our session 2 video featuring:

Levy Mwende, once a young vulnerable boy in Zambia himself, walked the foot paths of Masoyi, South Africa in Hands at Work's earliest days of home-based care, going in and out of broken homes and having a huge impact on the lives of youth there. Levy went out from there to many African countries, breaking new ground and capacity building in communities, travelling to overwhelmed villages in countries like Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world, to mobilise local leaders and train them to care for the poor. Today Levy serves on the Hands at Work Executive Team.

and Lynn Chotowetz, a Canadian who stepped off the plane on to African ground for the first time 7 years ago, and never turned back. He is a member of the Executive Team at Hands at Work, and in his life at Hands, has been involved in almost every aspect from youth development to mobilising communities to raising up new leaders within Hands.

Step 2: Reflect

Consider the implications of committing to work only among the Poorest Of The Poor. As you reflect, consider what challenges the following 3 groups of people might have in participating with work that is so committed to the Poorest Of The Poor

  • the local African community
  • Hands at Work
  • invested friends of Hands at Work (team members, visitors, churches, donors)

Consider the effort required to develop true Local Community Ownership. What challenges might the following 3 groups of people have in participating with work that is striving for Local Community Ownership:

  • the local African community
  • Hands at Work
  • invested friends of Hands at Work (team members, visitors, churches, donors)

Step 3: Discuss
