Meet Naomi and Miriam

The bond between eight-year-old Naomi* and her seven-year-old sister Miriam* has helped them both cope with great losses in their young lives. In 2019, their mother left them in the care of an elderly neighbour, Louise*, for what was meant to be only a short time. Sadly, their mother has not returned, but Louise has been lovingly caring for the girls like they were her own grandchildren ever since. Originally from Mozambique, Louise does not have identification documents, making government grants and services unavailable to her. She struggles to find work to be able to provide for her family’s basic needs.

Eventually, word spread throughout the community about Naomi and Miriam’s situation and so Care Workers from the Pfunani CBO visited them in their home. Hearing their story, they invited the girls to begin attending the Care Point.

Over time, the girls have begun opening up to their Care Worker, Thembi, and attending the Care Point has been a beacon of hope for them. Naomi and Miriam love to play games with the other children and their basic needs are now being met. Thembi visits the family in their home regularly, and makes sure to follow up on the girls on days when they don’t attend the Care Point. Thembi shares, “What Louise lacks in financial support for the girls, she more than makes up for with the deep love that she has for them.”

Today we invite you to pray for children across Africa, like Naomi and Miriam, who are in desperate need of Christ’s hope and transformational love.
