The urban slum community of Sakubva in Zimbabwe is a difficult place to be. In July this year 50 more children who were identified as the most vulnerable were added to the care of Sakubva Christian Caring Trust – a Community Based Organisation of local volunteers who daily care holistically for children in their own community. It is families like these who will benefit from the Christ-like care they receive.

These sisters, both struggling in difficult circumstances, live together to support one other. One sister has a 12-week-old baby and the other recently lost her husband. Mary’s* husband sometimes comes home and throws everything of hers out of the house, locking her outside. Mary has not seen him for some time now. The eldest of her three children has a daughter (pictured) whom Mary looks after while her daughter tries to buy and sell items at the market to earn an income. Mary is three months behind on rent and fears she may soon be without a home for her children.
A young downcast girl was walking along the road. A visitor walked up to the door of her home and the girl quickly ran back to the house to see who was visiting, sitting down with her Gogo (granny), her eyes widened. Mable* has a small subsistence garden with which she feeds her family, as well as another young mother who lives at the same house with her child. Money and food are scarce, but there is a strong faith in this house.

Across town from the Care Point and beyond the Sakubva market more families have been identified as desperately needing care. These two families live in rooms in the back of a church. The only light in the rooms comes from gaping holes in the wall boards. Struggling to buy food, both families are far behind in the rent that they owe.
