Initially, when seven-year-old Joseph started attending the Msengeni B Care Point in Eswatini, he had many behavioural challenges, but the Care Workers did not give up on him. They were committed to sharing God’s love with Joseph through their words and actions. Now, Joseph loves going to the Care Point, where he feels safe and secure and can positively interact with other children.

“I wanted to serve the children because I had the heart to care even when I didn’t have the means to.” – Care Worker Ellie from Msengeni B Community, Eswatini

Before Hands at Work started serving in Msengeni B Ellie, along with three other women, was committed to caring for the most vulnerable. Daily, they would cook food to feed the children, even when it cost them personally. When Hands at Work came to Msengeni B, they joined these ladies in caring for the most vulnerable children and mobilised other Care Workers from the local church to help them. Today the Care Workers, with the support of Hands at Work, are caring for 75 children.

“I became a Care Worker because when I lost my parents at a young age, my auntie needed to care for me, and I saw that it was good for me, so I wanted to be a mother and care for other children. Also, Hands at Work is helping me care for my three disabled children and so I wanted to help back. I enjoy playing, singing and dancing with the children. As a Care Worker, I not only care for the children, but I also get cared for.” – Zodwa is a Care Worker in Msengeni B Community, Eswatini.

In 2017, local volunteer #CareWorker, Maria, met nine-year-old Mbuso's* family and clearly saw the challenges that they faced. Maria knew exactly what was needed to be done and so she invited the children to come to the Msengeni B Care Point daily, where they could receive a hot and nutritious meal and support with their education and basic health care. The care Maria gave them was truly life-changing! Now in school, Mbuso loves his grade 3 class and has a hard time picking his favourite subject! Mbuso is thriving at the Care Point. Being generously welcomed into a beautiful community of loving and committed Care Workers has benefited not only Mbuso, but his entire family.

When he was just a young boy, both of Mthobisi’s* parents died, and he was taken, along with his three brothers, to live with his grandparents in the community of Msengeni. Life was very difficult for them as neither of his grandparents had a way to make money. They were struggling to provide enough food for the family and send all the boys to school. Although primary school fees are covered by the government in Swaziland, children must have a proper school uniform and school shoes. Unfortunately, these simple items were far out of reach for this family to afford and Mthobisi and his brothers missed out on schooling for an extended period of time.

The Msengeni B Care Workers saw the desperation in Mthobisi; not having enough food to keep him from being consistently hungry, and the vulnerability he faced by missing out on his education. They knew they had to do something to help. They welcomed Mthobisi to the daily Care Point in the community with loving arms, where he immediately began receiving a hot meal every day. In addition, they were able to provide Mthobisi with a school uniform and shoes to continue his education. One particular Care Worker, Sthembile, fought hard for this family and wanted to help even further. Through her hard work, she was able to provide the family with seeds and fertilizer for their crop, and assisted them in ploughing their small piece of land. This was a huge encouragement for Mthobisi’s grandparents and they are looking forward to having a good harvest, thanks to the good rains, to provide their family with food to eat.

At school, Mthobisi is now in grade 7 and enjoys English, mathematics and social studies. He also loves to play soccer with his friends at the Care Point. It has become a safe place for him here; to play and make new friends. Sthembile continues to be a strong support for Mthobisi and his family, regularly visiting them in their home and sharing about the love of Jesus. Her encouragement and love has made a huge difference in Mthobisi’s life, bringing him closer to Jesus every day.

Mthobisi is one of the 50 chidlren from Msengeni B Community in Swaziland who began attending the Care Point in 2017.

There has been lots of growth in #Swaziland over the last few months. A second Care Point in Msengeni Community - known as Msengeni B - started at the beginning of October. This allows the children from the further side of the community to have a Care Point in their own area, limiting the long distances that they have to walk. There are six #CareWorkers serving the children. They have shown great initiative and passion in serving the most vulnerable in their community.
