Mavis, a member of the local Hands at Work team in Luanshya, takes time to explain to the most vulnerable children in K Block Community, #Zambia, the importance of regular deworming. She explains how it can aid their overall health and hygiene, ensuring that they receive the nutrients that they need from their daily meal.

Ten-year-old Philip* lives with his five siblings and step-siblings. Philip’s mother, Martha*, is a very broken woman, wounded from many years of neglect and abuse. Martha seeks comfort in many relationships with men, which often leaves her children alone for long periods of time. Four years ago, Jennifer, a dedicated local volunteer Care Worker from K-Block community, heard of the children’s story and visited them in their home. Finding the children malnourished and unsure of where their next meal would come from, Jennifer knew she needed to intervene and care for these children. Philip’s oldest brother has recently married and, although the couple are young, they are also dedicated to caring for Philip and his siblings.

Nine-year-old Jubilee* is the second youngest child in a family of five, and is looked after by his mother. However, he is in great need of positive role models around him. At Kafubu Community Based Organisation, there is a strong understanding of God’s care, and this compassionate love is demonstrated by the Care Workers. One particular Care Worker takes Jubilee with her when she attends church and encourages him to play with her children. These children have a stabilising influence on Jubilee and are good behavioural role models for him.

“In K-Block Community, myself, along with Abe, were able to be a part of church mobilization efforts. The time that we had with the pastors was incredibly humbling as I was teaching older pastors who have persevered through many trials. I was reminded of the need for one another in the body as Christ as I have much to learn from others who understand suffering for Jesus’ name. I was encouraged to hear their desire to be more involved in what is happening in the community and to grow in what God is doing. As I return home, I hope to take what I have seen in Africa and challenge our church leaders to become more involved in what God is doing around the world.”

Joey Chen is a pastor from Sunset Church in the US, who came to Zambia for the first time, alongside Abe Lee, an elder in the church. He reflects on what he saw and was challenged by.
