When the most vulnerable children come to the #LifeCentre, the care that they receive extends far beyond their physical needs. Not only do they receive a hot and nutritious meal daily, but they are loved and supported by the #CareWorkers. They learn the word of God and what it means to be a Christ-like leader within their community. Many of the youth in our communities take a leadership role at the Life Centre and some are involved in cooking, washing dishes, and helping the younger children. Additionally, the children have the freedom to play with other children their own age, away from the responsibilities and burdens that many carry at home.
When the most vulnerable children come to the #LifeCentre, the care that they receive extends far beyond their physical needs. Apatuku Community, Nigeria ⠀ ⠀ When her father passed away, 12 year old Fola* and her family were now left in a desperate situation. Bereft, lonely and without support, her mother no longer had any financial stability and her family was forced to relocate. In unfamiliar surroundings, Fola wandered the streets, trying to find ways to support her mother. Alongside the practical concerns of everyday living, Fola’s dreams fell apart when she was forced to leave school. When Bose, a volunteer #CareWorker found them, she invited Fola and her brothers to the #LifeCentre and with their support, Fola is delighted that she can once again attend school and engage in her love of learning. ⠀

Luhonga Community, #DemocraticRepublicofCongo “One of the girls that I had the privilege of meeting while I was in Luhonga Community is crippled and quite delayed in her growth. She is living in one of the most vulnerable communities and nobody cares for her. Every day, she literally crawls on all fours to the Luhonga Care Point and then sits amongst the other children. She is always sitting in the dirt and so becomes quite dirty. She is such a symbol of hopelessness. The #CareWorkers and other children are committed to loving her. While I was there, when the children started singing, I saw her stand on her crippled legs and start singing and dancing. What this child does is bring hope. She brings more joy than anyone else because people see how she stands up out of the dust and worships and is grateful for the food that she receives.” George Snyman, co-founder of Hands at Work, reflects on a young girl that he met while he was in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo.
Sakubva Community, #Zimbabwe. ⠀ ⠀ When Mathew’s* father passed away three years ago, Mathew’s mother soon remarried a man who lives in Mozambique, and she went to live with him. Sadly, he did not allow her to take her children with her, so she left them to stay with their grandmother, Prudence*. Prudence carries a heavy burden and desperately tries to care for her grandchildren. Not able to keep up with the rent payments and feeling overwhelmed by the hardships in life, she stopped going to church and was close to giving up hope. ⠀ ⠀ In January 2019, #CareWorkers found Mathew and his siblings in desperate need of basic necessities, love and hope. They were all welcomed with open and loving arms to receive a hot, nutritious meal at the Care Point, access to basic health care, and a place back in school. The Care Workers faithfully visit the family, comforting and encouraging Prudence. Joy has been brought to each member of Mathew’s family as they have encountered Christ through the Care Workers. ⠀ ⠀ #ServingTheMostVulnerable

That group became Hands at Work and their journey took them to some of the poorest communities in Africa. It was here that they found the orphaned, the widowed and the dying. There seemed to be no hope but there was a promise from God. He said, ‘go to them and you will find my heart’. ⁣ ⁣ #ServingTheMostVulnerable

Recently, Bree and Ian Bone, International Volunteers (#Canada), had the opportunity to spend five weeks with the local Hands at Work team in Swaziland. ⠀ ⠀ "One day, while we were in Bhandeni Community, #Swaziland, Vusi Mbuza and Melody Makusua, African Volunteers (South Africa), wanted to have a meeting with the #CareWorkers, to address some challenges. Due to the language barrier, we don’t know what the conversation was, but we heard the tone and watched the body language for over two hours. Vusi and Melody led the meeting firmly but gently, giving loving space for the Care Workers to share and to talk. Afterwards, the Care Workers had made their own plans to address the stumbling blocks, but this doesn’t happen without loving leadership."⠀ ⠀ #ServingTheMostVulnerable

While they were in Oshoek, they spent time making #HolyHomeVisits, getting to know the most vulnerable children and the Care Workers, and helping to paint the Oshoek #LifeCentre building. It was a great opportunity for the team members to gain a deeper understanding of the vulnerability that exists within South Africa.

Pauline did so, but accidentally spilt some of the fuel on herself. When Pauline’s mother tried to light the fire, Pauline’s clothes ignited. Pauline and her mother experienced severe burns, and 80% of Pauline’s little body is scarred from the incident. ⠀ ⠀ Despite pain and scars, Pauline has been healing well and at school she is a cheerful girl. Her #CareWorker, Bertha, is also her teacher at the community school. Bertha visits Pauline regularly at home, and the love between them is obvious. Bertha, along with the other Care Workers, continues to provide Pauline with a place of care and safety: a place where she can simply be a child and play with her friends.⠀

Ruth*, from the community of Chibuli, #Zambia, was accused of witchcraft by her husband’s family and members of the community after he passed away. These accusations left Ruth feeling bitter towards the people around her, especially towards her late husband’s family.⠀ ⠀ In May 2018 Ruth heard about the Relationship Group that was held for the #PrimaryCaregivers in Chibuli and facilitated by Sylvia, a member of the local Hands at Work team in Luanshya. They gather together to read the word of God, share their challenges and pray with one another. One of the key themes shared is forgiveness and how God can bring restoration. Recently, Ruth was able to share about how much she has benefitted from joining the group and has learnt how to forgive those who have hurt her. She is beginning to heal and knows that God is restoring her.⠀

When they see that people from outside Africa, often from very far, come to personally visit them in their homes, and show love to them, they are encouraged. ⁣ ⁣ When team members share their stories, humble themselves and push themselves to fetch water, or eat maize meal with us, we know this is not easy for them.
