Ferdinand*, who is 12, lives with his family in the rural community of Sthobela. Two years ago, Ferdinand’s life drastically changed. While riding in the back of a truck on his way to school, he fell out onto the road while the vehicle was driving. He spent the following year in the hospital and at home recovering from his injuries, which set him back a year in school. On top of his already vulnerable life, Ferdinand’s file from the accident was lost in the police station and he was not able to access the therapy his body so desperately needed. ⠀ ⠀ #CareWorker Lily is using Ferdinand’s story to teach the other children about respect; that no matter how different people are from each other, they are equally important in God’s eyes. Because of the Christ-like examples shown by Ferdinand’s Care Worker, Lily, Ferdinand knows love and has a great hope for his future. ⠀ ⠀ Just recently, Ferdinand and his family received some good news – his file has been found! This means that Ferdinand’s mother can work towards receiving government compensation, as well as get her son access to the therapy he needs. 40 Days of Prayer is a specific time that is set aside for the Hands at Work family across the world to pray for the most vulnerable across Africa. Every year, we create prayer points for the different areas of Hands at Work and this year those daily prayer points were sent out through WhatsApp. They were sent to people living in Australia, Canada, the US, the UK, South Africa and Zambia. ⠀ ⠀ Jennifer Kim (International Office Volunteer, #US) shares a story about a unique and creative way that a past team member passed these messages along: ⠀ ⠀ “One of the team members from a US team trip in 2016 has been advocating for Hands at Work and Pimai C Community in #Zimbabwe. She is generating support in Korea from her family, friends and church. During 40 Days of Prayer, she diligently translated (with the help of Google translate) each of the 40 Days messages into Korean and sent these messages out. #CareWorkers are men and women who give of themselves to serve the most vulnerable within their community. They are often living in similar conditions to the children that they serve, yet they remain committed and dedicated to the furthering of God’s kingdom. They ensure that the children are effectively and holistically cared for not by simply feeding them but also by showing them what a life full of love, joy and hope looks like. Two of the Community Based Organisation (CBO) Coordinators from across #SouthAfrica share about what it means to care for the children: "When the children come to the Care Point, I am able to spend time with them and act as a mother figure. This time allows me to ask questions and ensure that they are doing okay. This is a profound time where we unite ourselves as one family to dance, share the word, do Holy Home Visits and cry out to God together. We stand together with our servant-hearted brothers and sisters who are caring for the most vulnerable in broken communities. In Chinaka Community, #Zimbabwe, #CareWorkers are caring for and supporting 125 of the most vulnerable children. At the present time, Hands at Work is working with the community to build a new Care Point – a #LifeCentre for the children. The Care Workers and the local pastors have taken a lead in this construction by making bricks, clearing roads and helping to dig pits for toilets. There has been a well built for water and a fence put around the Care Point. The construction of the main building and toilets will be happening in the near future. This is an exciting development for a community who truly understands what it means to care for each other.⠀ ⠀ #LocalChurch #CaringForTheMostVulnerable

The vision of Hands at Work is to mobilise the local church within the communities that are being served, to care for the orphaned and vulnerable children around them. When Hands at Work starts serving in a new community, children gather daily at a Care Point to receive #food, support with education and support with basic health care. However, the work that is being done, does not finish with Care Points. The dream of Hands at Work is to transform these Care Points into #LifeCentres in each of the communities across Africa.
